Final Essay

JULY 11 2014

2009311346 Oh SeungJin

There were many anymals on earth we couldn't see anymore such as dinosaurs. Do you know why they were all extinct? Among many reasons that they were died out, the most definite thing is natural disaster.
Since I was young, I wondered why they did not exist on reading dinosaur books. And I was shocked that the earth's collision with a comet forced dinosaurs into extinction. After I knew the truth, I had a certain fear of potential natural disaster. That’s why I chose these three articles about natural disasters in the world to alert people to the dangers of them. First article is "6.4 earthquake strikes Tonga", by JungSangHoon. Second one is "Neoguri a Dangerous Typhoon With Japan a Likely Target", by ChaSeungHun. The last one is "Solomon Islands flood victims demand land", by Yu Hyuk.

The first article "6.4 earthquake strikes Tonga" is in JungSangHoon's blog. I chose this article because the number of earthquakes in the world has slightly increased as time goes by. According to the article, a strong 6.4-magnitude quake struck off the Pacific nation of Tonga in 30th June 2014, but no tsunami warning was issued. It also said that Tonga sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of frequent seismic activity due to collisions between continental plates. JungSangHoon said the most dangerous and scary thing for human is natural disaster. He also said that the Tonga government should react appropriately so that the damage could be minimized. I agrree with his opinion because I know the scary of earthquake based on my experience. I almost came close to lose my friend who were in Tohoku because of Japan's deadly earthquake 2 years ago. By that experience, I reallized that the earthquake do not far from me and the preparation of it should be needed.

The second one is "Neoguri a Dangerous Typhoon With Japan a Likely Target" from ChaSeungHun's blog. I chose this article about Typhoon because the typhoon is the most familiar disaster in Korea. According to the article, Typhoon Neoguri generated July 4 was going north and more and more grew strong until last week. It also said Neoguri approached to Japan and if it had delayed to go east, it affected to South Korea with heavy rain and large waves. ChaSeungHun said the rainy season in Korea began and typhoon would come. I agree with his opinion that the season of typhoon has begun. Although we had known that 1~2 typhoon would come to Korea every year, there had been much serius damages in not only crop but also loss of lives. Therefore, we should prepare throughly to minimize the damage by typhoon.

The last one is "Solomon Islands flood victims demand land" from Yu Hyuk's blog. I chose this article about flood victims because this article shows it is important to not only prepare for misfortune but also restore after misfortune. Acoording to this article, more than one thousand people lived in the centres after flash floods which killed at least 21 people, and left thousands homeless from April which flasth had occured to June. In the article, although the government closed by the end of the June, Solomon Islands flood victims had said they won't leave evacuation centres until the government came thorugh with its promise to resettle them. YuHyuk said that the government must to keep the centres because victims have no other refuge. I agree with his opinion because the first thing we should do is compensation for victims and restoration if natural disaster happened. If the compensation for victims and recovery of damage did not work thoroughly, we would suffer same damages from it.

Those three articles are all related to natural disaster. By looking all these articles, I realized that the numbers and damages of natural disasters are increasing  and why preparation and restoration are important.
Earthquake occurence in first article, Typhoon called Neoguri in second article, flood victims in third article.
Those are also warning that human could be another victims of extinction like the movie "Tommorow". Therefore the preparation for natural disaster should be thoroughly done to avoid loss of lives.

Media Project : Music

1. Meaning of you - IU (Feat. Kim Chang Wan)

- Release date: 2014.05.16

- Summary of song
The original of "Meaning of you" was released in 1984 by SanUlLim, the legendary Korean band. Recently, IU did a cover version of this song with Kim Chang Wan, the lead singer of SanUiLim. This song is title song of IU's special album "Flower Bookmark". The lyrics of this song is about how much his existence means to her. This song says each word his say, each laugh have such big meanings to her.

- Persuasive
This song was good to me for three reasons : a sweet voice of IU, the collaboration with legendary musician, philosophical title, "Meaning of you".
First, the sweet voice of IU made this song so lovely compared to neutral voice of SanUlLim.
Second, I thought that the collaboration with legendary muscian inspired sense of nostalgia in old ages and told the classic which new ages didn't hear before.
Third, the philosophical title, "Meaning of you" was so special to me because I think "meaning of you" really means the essense, which is the most important thing of life.
For these reasons, this song was good to me.

2. EYES, NOSE, LIPS - TAEYANG

- Release date :  2014.06.03

- Summary
This song was published on 03 June 2014, and performed by TAEYANG, the lead singer of Korean boy group BIGBANG. Actially, TAEYANG was called Korean Usher because of his soulful voice. It is R&B song which is title of TAEYANG's second solo album. This song  is about missing and forgetting her after break. He shows how deep his love was by this lyrics "From your eyes, nose, lips, touch that used to touch me, to the little fingertips, I can still you. But like a burnt out flame, burnt and destroyed all of our love hurts so much."

- Persuasive
This song was good to me for 3 reasons : his soulful voice, gaining the sympathy from this lyrics, ease to sing along.
First,I thought it was good to hear because his soulfoul voice made this song more mournful.
Second, the lyrics of this song was acceptable because I already had the same experience.
Third, It was easy to sing along to because this song was only made by TAEYANG's natural voice without trendy machines sound.
For these reasons, this song was good to hear.

3. Good-night Kiss - JUNHYOSEONG

- Release date : 2014.05.12

- Summary
This song was released on 12 May 2014, performed by JunHyoSeong. She is the lead singer of SECRET, Korean girl group. It is title song of her first solo album. Music video of the song is about fascinating lover of friend by using her sensual charm.

- Persuasive
I love this song not for its lyrics, melody but her performance. Actially, the lyrics and melody were below the level I think. However the performance was so good to me because of her sensual charm. As you see, JunHyoSeong was known for her glamourous figure. Also, the dance of the music was so sexy so I fell in love with her although I have a girlfrend.

blog project 3: 3 ARTICLE about Italy

1. For sale: Italian castle, haunted island and convent. All offers considered

- Summary
Government of Italy put abundant cultural heritage on the block to help reduce Italy's vast debts.
On offer were a castle, complete with a surrounding park, a convent and a reputedly haunted island in the Venice lagoon. However, all but one of the properties have been withdrawn from sale after failing to attract sufficiently lucrative offers. Italy hopes to raise more than €6bn over the next three years from the sale of another 40 historic properties and almost 500 others of lesser cultural value. The failure of the inaugural auction, however, raises a string of questions about the methods used to value the properties and whether an online auction is really the best way in which to dispose of them?
Unfortunately, the Guardian was unable to answer any of these questions.

- Persuasive
I think government of Italy should not sell their nation's treasures for three reasons : wrong method valuing nation's treasures, unprofitability of haunted island, incurring a great loss by pursuring a small profit.
First, online auction is not the best way valuing nation's treasures its historical value because it is only considered economic value more than historical value.
Second, if Italy put their heritages on the block, nobody could buy them such as haunted castle because of their unprofitability.
Third, Italy will be penny-wise and pound-foolish because its historical value will increase as the time goes by.
For these reasons, the government of Italy should not sell their heritages.

2. Americans taught how to 'rap' Italian gestures

- Summary
The US consulate in Milan has released a rap video to teach American citizens - often chided for their poor linguistic skills - the art of Italian hand gestures. Americans in Italy have a bad reputation for failing to learn the beautiful language, with some tourists firing questions at locals in English with little care for linguistic differences. Now the US consulate in Milan has stepped in, going beyond the spoken word and offering a lesson in the art of Italian hand gestures.

- Persuasive
It was so funny after saw this video because of various hand gesture of Italian. When I went to Milan 2 years ago, I communicated some Italian but couldn't see any hand gestures. After watching this video, I thought that being careful to express hand gesture is important because same hand gestures could be different meaning to other country. For example, a hand gesture which means okay in Korea means swearing in Brazil.

3. Sperm donor services to start in Italy

- Summary
Public and private clinics in Italy is able to provide egg and sperm donation services after a ban was lifted in April. The fertilization treatment is accessible after mid-June following a ruling by the constitutional court in April, which said that the ban on sperm and egg donors was “unlawful” and “unconstitutional”, ANSA news agency reported. The regulation formed part of Italy’s controversial law on fertility treatment, or the so-called 'Law 40', which has been in place since 2004 and also bans fertility treatment for single people, same-sex couples and women over child-bearing age. Opponents described it as “medieval”, while supporters said it respected the right of the human embryo, preserved the family and ended years of unregulated fertility treatment. Opinion polls suggest that most Italians would like to see the law relaxed.
- Persuasive
I think that the fertilization treatment should be accessible to everybody for three reasons : equality of human rights, suffering of not having a baby, existing various forms of families.
First, all human should not be discriminated because of equal rights to have a baby.
Second, not having a baby is painful although they have a family because they can't gain happiness of baby growing.
Third, there are many forms of families such as homosexual couples, singles.
For these reasons, the fertilization treatment should be allowed to every people.

Blog Project 2. 2nd Continent Choice: 3 ARTICLES of Singapore in Asia

1. Sleeping less? Your brain will age faster, study finds

- Summary

This article is saying that older adults who sleep less are aging more rapidly. They found that those who slept fewer hours showed faster ventricle enlargement and decline in cognitive performance.
These findings are also saying short sleep as a marker of brain aging because past research showed that faster brain ventricle enlargement causes cognitive decline and the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Researchers are saying that work done elsewhere suggests that seven hours a day for adults seem to be the sweet spot for optimal performance on computer-based cognitive tests. They hopes the study paves the way for future work on sleep loss and its contribution to cognitive decline.

- Persuasive

This article about sleeping was good to read because it was acceptable by my past life experience, mentioned another related research, indicated Singapore's rapidly ageing society.
First, this article was acceptable in that the day after loss of sleep was more dull compared to the day after sufficient sleep.
Second, it mentioned another related research saying that seven hours a day could be optimal performance on computer-based cognitive tests to suggest the solution for research.
Third, it indicated Singapore's rapidly ageing society which is a problem of modern society.
For these three reasons, it was good to read.

2. Cultivating self-confidence in students

- Summary

This article is saying that figuring out what factors are linked to motivation and confidence is especially crucial in the arena of academics, because these are both important in promoting positive learning outcomes.
The biggest single factor of self-confidence is how well we do. Observing  people we know perform the same task and Feedback from others are also influence our self-confidence. Setting achievable, specific and gradual  goals is the key to enhancing self-confidence. By incorporating appropriate goals and feedback into our educational systems, we can help drive a cycle of increasing self-confidence and therefore motivation.

- Persuasive

This article was good to read because it was acceptable based on history, could help people lacking in confidence and explained why self-confidence is crucial for learning.
First, it was acceptable because many great men set right goals and achieve it as a result in history.
Second, it could help people who are lacking of confidence to obtain great results.
Third, this article said confidence about ability to do something is more likely to readily engage in that activity and it causes good performence.
For these reasons, this article was good to read.

3. Workers’ employment, living circumstances ‘can be improved’

"Canada’s New Foreign Worker Rules Upsetting Business Groups", The Canadian Press, May 1st, 2013, http://canadakonsult.com/canadas-new-foreign-worker-rules-upsetting-business-groups/

- Summary

This article is saying that foreign workers’ employment and living conditions in Singapore could be improved to prevent them from being the cause of public-order incidents in the future.
Ministry of Manpower (MOM) regulates the fees charged by agents which is a common problem of many foreign workers to lighten the debt burden.
The  Committee of Inquiry (COI) also suggested that more effort should be made to educate foreign workers on their rights and protections, as well as specific employment processes.
There is also a need to train those who deal with foreign workers in cultural sensitivity and appreciating the role these workers play in Singapore.
Finally, the COI recommended continuous improvement of the accommodation facilities for foreign workers, especially in services, amenities and recreation.

- Persuasive

This article about foreigner workers was good to read because it seems to benefit  minorities, suggested great solutions and could be a good model to Korea.
First, improving foreign workers' employment and living circumstances was good because foreign workers involved to minorities are discriminated for a long time.
Second, I think Singapore Committe of Inquiry (COI) suggested a good solution educating foreign workers on their rights and protections and employers how to deal with them because Knowing and having the rights for themselves are ideal circumstance.
Third, it could be a good model to Korea because Korea had same problems with those of  singapore.
For these three reasons, this article was good to read.

Blog Project 1: 4 ARTICLES - Cameroon in Africa

1. Nigeria' s Boko Haram begins to destabilise Cameroon

- Link

http://www.cameroononline.org/2014/05/13/nigeria-s-boko-haram-begins-destabilise-cameroon/

- Summary

Cameroon has been infiltrated by Nigeria’s Islamist extremist group Boko Haram and there are fears that this central African nation, known for its stability, is drifting into chaos.
Nigerian Islamist extremist group attacked a military post in the region of Cameroon on May 5, lends credence to the fact that the attack was carried out with the help of local informants. Attacks on Cameroon also have result in refugees to fleeing for safety in Cameroon. Many in the region remain afraid for their lives and are reluctant to volunteer any information about Boko Haram’s members. Government has to make use of all its available human and technical resources to stem the threat.

- Persuasive
It was terrible to read for three reasons : innocent people were killed, the conflicts could expand to war between nations,
First, innocent people in Cameroon were killed for no reasons by Boko Haram.
Second, the conflicts between Cameroon and Boko Haram could expand to bigger war that killing more people.
Also, the conflicts, the crises in Cameroon make Cameroonian unstable. Therefore, government of Cameroon must fight against Boko Haram to protect their nation.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/06/16/us-internet-paypal-idUSKBN0ER1ML20140616

- Summary

PayPal was entered to 10 new countries last week, including Cameroon, providing online payment alternatives for consumers via mobile phones or PCs in markets often blighted by financial fraud. the expansion would bring the number of countries it serves to 203. Once the services go live, customers in the 10 countries with access to the Web and a bank card authorized for Internet transactions. It will be able to register for a PayPal account and make payments to millions of sites worldwide.

- Persuasive

I think Paypal's market advance to Cameroon although came late is good for both Camerronian and Paypal because it will develope quality of life in Cameroonian, will create new industries, and Cameroon is one of the fast-growing markets in Africa, and
First, it benefits reduce transfer cost in business.
Second, it will create new industries as online business trades increases by Paypal service.
Third, Cameroon is one of many fast-growing countries in Africa, so there are many potential customers who want online payment service.
For these reasons, Paypal's market advance to Cameroon will benefit both Cameroon and Paypal.

- Link

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-26/cameroon-gets-108-million-from-france-for-flood-prevention.html

- Summary

France will lend Cameroon 52 billion CFA francs ($108 million) to fund the second phase of a water drainage project in the capital, Yaounde. The project seeks to manage flood-related risks and reduce associated health risks for residents on the banks of the Mfoundi river which runs through the city, the government and the French Development Agency said in a joint statement.

- Persuasive

Many cameroonian blames to this decision of Cameroon's government because cameroon finance will record deficit. However I think that  it is a wise decision because it will have more profit compared to potential flood-related damages in the long term.
For this reason, I think funding from France is a wise decision.

I think that we should do our best to heal lands for three reasons : nature such as land is the most precious source, it is the inheritance to give our discendants, and It is difficult to restore nature to its former condition once it is laid waste.
First, nature is the most precious source because human civilization has progressed using  natural sources.
Second, we should give these nature to our discendants for maintenance of human civilization.
Third, it is difficult to restore nature to its former condition once it is laid waste.
For these reasons, we should do our best to heal lands.
